On November 23rd, 2019, the 2nd Research Forum of CFCS and Turing Class was held at No. 5 Courtyard of Jing Yuan, Peking University. 24 students from CFCS and Turing Class were involved as speakers, faculty of CFCS attended the forum as the judge. Based on the "Lightning Talk" and "Poster Exhibition" of the 1st Research Forum, this forum committee added "Tutorial" and "Panel Discussion" sessions, aiming to promote more in-depth information exchange and experience sharing among students. This event attracted around 100 students from EECS, Yuanpei College and the School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University participated.

Baoquan Chen, Boya Distinguished Professor of Peking University, executive director of CFCS, Peking university, welcomed everyone in the opening speech. He said that this forum aimed to promote the academic communication among CFCS & Turing Class students. Professor Chen stressed on the importance of communication in scientific research and wished everyone could cherish this opportunity to absorb the academic nutrition, and to enjoy the process of presentation and exchange.

In the "Lightning Talk" session, 16 speakers (1 remote speaker) each spent 5 minutes to introduce their research works, attracting the audience to vote for their posters. The reports cover cutting-edge research in theoretical computer science, computational economics, natural language processing, machine learning, computer graphics and other fields. Some of the work has been accepted by top international conferences, and some are ongoing stage results and submitted papers.

Poster Exhibition

After voting, Turing Class students Jiaheng Wang (Class of 2016), Guanqi Zhan (Class of 2017) and Yijia Weng (Class of 2017) won the Best Poster Award; Xingyu Ni (Class of 2016), Rundi Wu (Class of 2016) and Yijia Weng, Zhide Wei (Class of 2017) won the Best Presentation Award. Faculty of CFCS presented certificates and prizes to the winners.

After lunch, the academic journey continued. In "Tutorial" session, 12 30-minute reports were delivered by 12 senior students, introducing the cutting-edge issues in the academic field. This session is mainly to help junior students broaden their horizons, and find their research interests. The topics include many popular issues such as deep learning, block chain, artificial intelligence, computer vision and image processing, as well as basic directions such as cryptography, stochastic algorithm and complexity in theoretical computer science, as well as frontier interdisciplinary disciplines such as computational economics. The speakers used vivid examples such as "how to shuffle the playing card more evenly" and "let artificial intelligence generate faces" to raise profound academic questions, which benefited the audience a lot.

The last session "Panel Discussion" was hosted by Dr. Yuqing Kong, assistant professor of CFCS. Senior Turing Class students who went to overseas universities for their summer research attended as guests. Focusing on the theme "how to start scientific research", the discussion began with questions from junior Turing Class students (Class of 2017 and 2018). The senior Turing Class students shared their trial and error experiences, telling the Class of 2018 students "how to find research interests", and they also shared their valuable experience and lessons in contacting tutors and finding projects.
